摘要

The following is an excerpt from a book by Albert Sauv-eur, published in 1935, entitled "Metallurgical Dialogue." We again take up the role of pupil (P) as we listen to and question Prof. Albert Sauveur on then-current ideas of how metal grains are held together. The discourse leads into problems in understanding why the strength of steel increases after working at room temperature. A valuable lesson on the importance of developing hypotheses to aid as tools for further understanding material behavior evolves. The lesson tells us that we should not treat these tools as "gospel" but seek a better explanation to account for a broader range of related facts and observations. Eventually, agreement between prior knowledge, new observations, and experimental data will lead to a new theory.
