After he discovered the alkalis Sodium and Potassium in 1807 (see METALL 12-07), the English scientist Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829) brought to light, just a year later, the alkaline-earth metals - Magnesium, Calcium, Strontium and Barium, and he also shared in the discovery of Boron. He is likewise responsible for the naming of the halogens Fluorine, Chlorine, Iodine and elements 13 and 14, Aluminum and Silicon.
