The Indonesian state-owned oil and gas firm Pertamina (Jakarta) said in September it had raised the price of LPG by 23%, its second hike of the year, to cut mounting losses from nonsubsidized gas sales. Subsidies are politically sensitive in Indonesia, where a large percentage of the population lives on incomes of less than $2 a day. Protests against increases in fuel prices contributed to the overthrow of the late dictator Suharto in 1998.
