Mining part balancing act

On May 24 this year the CSIRO and the University of Sydney issued a media release that got little attention. It was a pity because it focused on some findings about the sustainability of 135 of Australia's industries. Included in the media release launching a study called The Balancing Act was this statement: "A new report by CSIRO and University of Sydney has opened up the full production chain for Australian industries to reveal mat some industries, like mining, are more sustainable than generally assumed." The release quoted one of the report's coauthors, the CSIRO's Barney Fornan. "Generally mining is not really thought of as particularly sustainable by the community at large," he said. But, Foman added: "Our work shows that in terms of the triple bottom line, mining actually has a more positive impact across environmental and financial indicators than we would have thought.
