Working in South Africa while the country was going through its historic changeover from apartheid rule to a new look democracy essentially gave Exco Resources Ltd's Michael Anderson two career-defining opportunities. Firstly, because of the exodus of mining professionals leaving the country in the late 1980s/early 1990s due to rising political uncertainty, the young geology graduate from Northern Ireland discovered he was able to move up the managerial chain reasonably quickly.
