Beneficiation can be denned as a variety of processes whereby extracted ore is separated by physical means into mineral and waste streams, the former of which is suitable for further processing or direct use. The beneficiation of magnetite is an integral part of the future of iron ore processing. Historically, the focus of Western Australian producers has been on exporting direct predominantly hematite shipping ore (DSO). The future for new DSO resources is limited, so companies are changing their emphasis to processing the very large, undeveloped magnetite ores by using beneficiation to produce shippable magnetite concentrates.
