Australia's minerals industry has been told it needs to continue working with leading Commonwealth research organisations and universities if it wants to stay at the forefront of technology and make new discoveries. This advice came from Dr Peter Lilly, the director of CSIRO's 80 million dollars Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship. "From my experience, the companies that work closely with researchers and implement new technologies as they are being researched, not when the findings are published 12 months later, stay close to the cutting edge and meet with success," he explained.
