IN MANY WAYS the discovery of the Ridgeway porphyry deposit by Newcrest Mining Ltd in 1996 was a major turning point in the evolution of a company which has since earned the title of Australia's largest domestic gold producer. Opened in 2002 at a reported capital cost of 400 million dollars, the Ridgeway gold and copper ore body has not only provided the resources house with the chance to perfect its (already extensive) underground mining skills while developing what will be a key part of its New South Wales expansion plan, but has also given the miner the reassurance that a level headed, yet flexible, approach to exploration can lead to something quite spectacular.
