THE PROPOSED 5 billion US dollars, possibly three-fold expansion of BHP Billiton Ltd's Olympic Dam mine would more than double the operation's contribution to the South Australian economy to around 2.5 billion dollars annually. At the recent AMEC Congress, PIRSA division of minerals and energy executive director Paul Heithersay said the expansion would create an additional 23,000 jobs in the state. It is expected that the town of Roxby Downs, where most of the Olympic Dam mine and plant employees are based, will more than double in size to a population of about 10,000. Olympic Dam currently has a mineral resource of 4,430 million tonnes grading 1.1 percent copper, 0.4 kilograms/t uranium and 0.5 grams/t gold. The operation is planned to be converted from an underground mine to an open pit, the establishment of which will require the daily removal of around 1 Mt of overburden for four years.
