AS MANY MINERAL proponents who have ventured into China will already know, doing business in the east Asian nation requires not only a lot of patience, but also a certain amount of cultural deftness. In essence, deal making with the Chinese involves two very important factors: guanxi (connections) and tactics. With regards to the former, foreigners should consider guanxi as pivotal given that the power of Chinese law and business transparency in the country is relatively weak. Good connections enable foreigners to gain better access to reliable and timely information, key resources and - perhaps most significantly of all - permission to go ahead with their business endeavours.
