One of the few industries Operating in a world heritage area, the Shark Bay Salt joint venture in Western Australia, remains on track with its expansion plans to reach production of 1.5 million tonnes per annum by 2006. The JV is operated and 70 percent owned by Shark Bay Resources Pty Ltd (Shark Bay Resources is equally owned by Clough Ltd and AMP Ltd) with Mitsui Salt Pty Ltd (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co Ltd) holding the remaining 30 percent. According to Shark Bay Resources chief executive officer Peter Newstead the 15 million dollars expansion program kicked off in 1996 with the operation currently running at 1.3 million tonnes per annum.
