Offshore move starting to pay dividends

With first gold production at Chirano in Ghana on track for the third quarter of next year, Red Back Mining Incorporation is getting on with the job of exploration after a five year hiatus. The project, located within the Bibiani belt along strike from AngloGold Ashanti Ltd's Bibiani mine, contains a proven and probable reserve of 17.8 million tonnes grading 1.9 grams/tonne for about 1.09 million ounces. Production will be at the rate of about 123,000 ounces per annum over a current mine life of eight years. Construction of the water storage facilities started last year, while earthworks have also begun on the treatment plant site. Meanwhile the exploration camp has been converted into a temporary construction development facility.
