摘要

A decade ago Broken Hill resembled Kalgoorlie in the late 1970s - down and feeling out. For Kalgoorlie, the bubble had burst on the nickel boom leaving nearby Kambalda looking economically sounder than Kalgoorlie, and there was one surviving gold mine, helped by on-and-off federal subsidies. For Broken Hill, the then breadwinner Pasminco Ltd was starting to go pear-shaped and jobs were disappearing in the remote mining centre in New South Wales far west.
