And the SA Government is now hoping that this sometimes controversial mineral will account for 50 percent of the state's mining exports by the end of the decade. In the meantime, the Mike Rann-led Labor administration should find itself overseeing 16 operating mines - and facilitating a further 30 projects progressing through the development pipeline - at the close of 2010. This is quite an achievement given that, back in 2004, there were only five major mining operations. So what changed?
