Excel lodges Wilpinjong development application

Excel Coal Ltd has lodged a development application with the New South Wales Department of Planning, Infrastructure and Natural Resources for the development of the Wilpinjong coal mine, near Mudgee in mid western NSW. The application is supported by a comprehensive environmental impact statement and follows more than 18 months of detailed mine planning and environmental impact studies. Major studies carried out include assessment of the positive and negative impacts of the proposed mine on water, air, flora, fauna, land use, Aboriginal and European heritage and local and regional communities. Excel is looking to construct a coal mine and associated infrastructure on land it owns which covers the 190 million tonne Wilpinjong coal deposit. The majority of this coal, at least 120 Mt, is committed to Macquarie Generation under .a 19 year contract to supply the Bayswater and Liddell power stations in the Hunter Valley.
