Contract mining--a growing industry

Contract miners in Australia are enjoying numerous tenders fuelled largely by China's continuous hunger for nickel, iron ore and coal. Leighton Contractors is one such company making the most of the large tenders currently on offer in Queensland's Bowen Basin. Leighton Contractors Queensland mining manager, Ken Cricthon said: "The Bowen Basin has some of the best coking coal in the world and there are a number of large tenders out at the moment." Here, Leighton Contractors is working on its fourth successive prestrip contract at one of the large coking coal mines, a 65 million dollars contract which runs until July 2005. As part of this process the company bought new equipment.
