The Canadian resources house which took on BHP Billiton's Ltd's troubled Ravensthorpe nickel laterite operation' in Western Australia expects to become a significant producer of the base metal sometime in the second half of 2012. First Quantum Minerals Ltd acquired the project in February last year for $338.8 million after the erstwhile Big Australian shut it down in early 2009 following the metal's price slide south in the early days of the global financial crisis.
