Chinese proponents behind the ambitious Ramu nickel-cobalt laterite play in Papua New Guinea are confident production will start at the project some time in 2009. President of Ramu NiCo Management (MCG) Ltd, Madam Luo Shu, said basic design of the 800 million US dollars undertaking should be completed some time in 2007, with construction then taking place over the next two years. Located in PNG's Madang Province, the project is so far the largest overseas endeavour taken on by any Chinese enterprise in the nonferrous metals area. To date, Ramu has total resources of 143 million short tons, of which measured and indicated reserves account for more than 78 Mt.
