Tsatisfy the mineralogical requirements of coal utilisation, processing, optimisation, resource assessment and combustion performance, it is important that automated mineralogical systems be able to both quantify and qualify the elemental proportions (organic and inorganic), major maceral groups, mineral deportment and proportions in coal. These systems must also identify the numerous amorphous phases in glass and accurately quantify the elemental proportion of these gasses. The introduction of liquid-free solid state detectors, stable digital scanning electron microscopes and high resolution backscatter electron detectors will improve the automated mineralogical systems and ensure that the required mineralogical data is acquired.
