AMEC chief offers industry a new approach

Coming from a background based in accounting and management, Dr Walawski is approaching his first anniversary as chief executive of the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC). In mid-2004 at the age of 45, Dr Walawski made a decision to give up his role as Western Australia's state director for the CPA Australia and move into his current role. "Other than my days in auditing, I didn't really have a strong understanding of the mining industry and felt as though for anyone working or living in Australia not to have that background was a significant shortcoming, particularly if you really want to know what makes Australia or WA tick, and I do," Dr Walawski explained. "I'm really interested in making a contribution to the State and the nation and I felt one way to do that was to be involved in the mining industry because it is such a critical part of the national economy and the underlying community structure."
