Following last year's pollution scare at its Mt Isa operations in Queensland, it seems the publicly-listed Xstrata is making a big effort to ensure the region's mining community remains a harmonious one. During the recent Australian Copper Conference, Xstrata Copper's general manager for sustainable development — Nathan Pike - was keen to point out that the company was willing to change with the times and meet social and environmental expectations. When compared with its Ernest Henry mine to the north east, Pike said, Mt Isa was "not designed well from day one", especially when it came to "having such a large scale operation in close proximity to the community".
