A Queensland-based research group has developed a novel tool to help direct the explosive energy during the blasting phase of coal mining operations. The developed technique uses deep slots and cavities created at required locations, size and number along the borehole. Although the use of such slots has been well recognised for fracture control in blasting, they have not been utilised for industrial scale applications. According to CRC Mining's Dr Mehmet Doktan, the cost benefit for miners to be able to control blast related damage and fracture development is significant.
