Tailings management has grown in prominence since the Western Australian Department of Minerals and Energy, now the Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR), introduced guidelines in the early 1990s regulating the standards that need to be adopted in order for mining leases to be issued and remain current. The DoIR and Department of Environment (DoE) have also become increasingly concerned about the impact of mining on the environment. This has led to changes in the way tailings are regulated, designed and monitored.
