Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals (AWAC) and the Jamaica Government has approved the expansion of the Jamalco alumina refinery in Jamaica. The expansion will add 1.5 million metric tons per annum of production to Jamalco, more than doubling the refinery's capacity to about 2.8 Mtpa. The cost is expected to be about 1.2 billion dollars and will include the cost of a power station, as well as high hurricane wind and earthquake requirements. The first phase, which will add 150,000 Mtpa, was announced in May and should be completed by the end of next year. The second phase, which adds about 1.35 Mtpa, is expected to be completed by the end of 2007.
