Three significant issues helped dominate proceedings at this year's highly successful ALTA nickel/cobalt and copper forums in Western Australia. Firstly -- judging from the presentations on the opening day --it is apparent that nickel laterites projects are far from dead. Secondly, proponen develop complicatec processing plays, partic or environmentally sen no choice but to comply with their social and environmental obligations. Finally, fire safety in copper solvent extraction operations has become a growing concern for the global mining sector. In terms of the re-emerging popularity of nickel laterites, it was interesting to note mat the world s first and third largest mining houses -- the publicly-listed BHP Billiton and Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) -- are both developing projects using pressure acid leaching that will help boost production of the base metal significantly well before the end of the decade.
