Marilkana: Justice must be transparent

August 16 was a day of deep tragedy for all South Africans when 34 people were killed when South African Police Service officers fired on them near Marikana platinum mine in the country's north-east. A further 78 were injured in the incident, which shocked the world. It was all too similar to the events which occurred at Sharpeville in the Gauteng Province way back in March 1960. At Sharpeville, 69 people died during a confrontation with police over the apartheid era's pass laws, which forced black people to carry documentation with them at all times to prove their residence in a particular area.
