The tools and techniques used to interpret fractured brittle materials are documented in new Recommended Practice Guide for the Fractography of Ceramics and Glasses. Fractography is a powerful but underutilized tool for The analysis of fractured glasses and ceramics. It is applicable to fractures created under controlled conditions in the laboratory and to component failures in service. Fractography can idertifs the origin of fracture, the cause of failure, and can even provide quantitative information about the stresses in the part. Fractographic analysis requites pattern recognition and the Guide includes many illustrations of common and obscure patterns. The Guide includes a full chapter on equipment and techniques used for fractographic analysis.
