CertainEasternEuropeancountrieshavealongtraditioninsheepfarming.Followingtheeconomictransitioninthe90sandagriculturalreforminthelastdecadeofthe20thcentury,thesectorhasundergonesignificantchangesthathaveresultedinadecreaseinproduction.However,sheepfarmingremainsimportantforthesurvivalofthemostdisadvantagedruralareasandtheenvironment.ThispapercomparesthecharacteristicsofthesheepfarmingsysteminEasternEuropeancountriestothatofthemainEuropeanproducersandanalysestheimportanceoffactorendowmentandproductivityasdeterminantsofthedifferingstrengthofthesectorfromonecountrytoanother.nbsp;NoneoftheEasterncountriesstudiedisamongthemainEuropeansheepfarmingproducersandthiscircumstanceiscloselylinkedtothedownturninthesheeppopulationinrecentyears.AnotherreasonbehindtherelativeweaknessofthesheepfarmingindustryinEasterncountriesistheirlowleveloflabourproductivity.Inaddition,differencesintermsoflandproductivityandproductivityperanimalarenotasdecisive.
