Fatty acid composition in human milk, UHT cow's milk and infant formulas

The fatty acid composition of human milk, UHT cow's milk and the infant formulas Nan and Bebiko were assayed in the study. Human milk samples were collected in the years of 1999-2000 from 130 breastfeeding mothers, on day 3 to 5 post partum and analysed by IDF Standard method (1999) with gas Chromatograph HP 6890. The sum of saturated fatty acids in human milk reached 46.6%, whereas in cow's milk and Nan and Bebiko formulas it was higher by 43%, 31%, and 14%, respectively. Human milk was found to contain 46% of monounsaturated fatty acids, whereas their concentrations in cow milk as well as Nan and Bebiko formulas appeared to be lower by 67%, 52%, and 56%, respectively. In human milk, the sum of polyunsaturated fatty acids accounted for 7.39% and was higher than that reported of cow milk (by 36%). Nan and Bebiko formulas were found to contain higher concentrations of those acids (by 106% and 189%, respectively) compared to human milk.
