Topology, Moduli and Automorphisms of Real Algebraic Surfaces

We present a brief overview of results on topology and deformations of real surfaces and make an attempt to systemize and extend some essential general phenomena discovered, like quasi-simplicity and finiteness, which are behind classical and recently completed classification results.
