摘要

A novel approach involving the combined use of light microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscopy was developed to examine the wood-adhesive interface in a commercial plywood manufactured by gluing Pinus radiata wood plies with a phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. The intricate nature of the penetration of adhesive into surface tissue layers of plies from the adhesive bond line was revealed. This correlative approach provided evidence of adhesive penetration into intact cell walls and cell wall regions damaged during the mechanical peeling of veneers (plies) in addition to the cell lumen, strengthening the current view that the mechanical interlocking of adhesive into wood is very important for adhesive performance.
