Statins in postmenopausal women linked to ‘increased diabetes risk’.

A follow-up analysis of all women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) clinical trials and observational study - a total of 161,808 women aged 50-79 years -has found that the use of statins is associated with a 48% increased risk of diabetes mellitus (hazard ratio [HR] 1.48). This, say the investigators, seems a class effect, although they concede that the changing 'market' for statins over the study period, which for originally enrolled subjects began in 1993 (with very limited statin use), 'may have influenced the outcomes'.
