While we wait for nickel mining companies to throw in the towel and close or suspend more of their loss-making operations it is interesting to note that Vale and Glencore Xstrata are reported to be in talks to lower costs by looking at ways to combine their operations in Canada’s Sudbury basin. This would not be the first time that the subject has been brought up, with savings through synergies estimated in the region of $550bn in 2006, for example.
