Analytical chemists associate the term "ion analysis" with a broad variety of analytical methods and analytical approaches.The range of methods spans from "old fashioned" but still efficient techniques such as titrimetry - often the best choice for precise and traceable measurements - to challenging approaches such as hyphenated ion-chromatography high resolution mass spectrometry.The majority of methods rank in between and deal with ion analysis in both routine and research applications.These methods are mainly applied in liquid phase and serve to determine ions by charge/size-ratio separations such as ion chromato-graphy,a variety of electrophoretic techniques,or by boundary layer interactions such as electrochemical methods and sensors.A third group combines ion information with spectroscopic properties via direct or indirect measurements.
