Ethylene is poised to become the petrochemical poster child of growth as North American shale gas continues to revolutionize the energy industry. On the other side of the molecule, heavier chemicals such as butadiene (BD)—and propylene to a lesser extent—are at first glance “losers” in the shale gas boom versus ethylene.
