Porous materials with well defined nanostructures play a crucial role for the future energy supply and a clean environment which has been chosen as the general theme of this special issue. In this context, zeolites are without any doubt a most important class of materials, and there is equally little doubt that Jens Weitkamp has shaped and developed this field of modern research as few others did. With this special issue of Microporous and Mesoporous Materials we convey our thanks to this outstanding scientist and personality on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
