Several groups of workers have recently been responsible for shedding light on the question of boron mobility, notably Brown and co-workers of the University of California, Davis, USA, Chamel at C.E.N.G., Grenoble, France, Hanson at Michigan State University, USA, Oertli at the Institute of Plant Sciences, Zurich, Switzerland, Shelp and his group at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Shu at Pingdon Poly tech University, Taiwan, and Thellier at Universite de Rouen, France. Oertli pioneered much of the work on mobility, but was most concerned with explaining the nature of, and reasons for the apparent immobility of boron. In our October 1994 Issue we discussed some of the latest ideas on transport and foliar uptake referring particularlyto the work of Brown, Hanson, Oertli, Shelp and Thellier, Now the ground-breaking work of Brown and Hu on the part played by sorbitol in boron mobility, merits close attention, not only in its own right but also for the leads it provides.
