Boron - Importance for Pollen, Fertilization, Seed and Fruit Set

Boron nutrition is inextricably bound to fertilization in all crops - from avocado to maize, and even wheat, which otherwise has a relatively low boron requirement for vegetative growth. As long ago as 1954 Dugger in California, reported that the essentiality of boron had been demonstrated for pollen tube growth of many crops including, apple, apricot, cherry, gingko, grapes, lily, onion, orchids, papaya, peach, pear, pine, plum and tomato. Studies have focused on two aspects of the role of boron infertilization : (a) pollen viability and germination (b) pollen tube growth.
