From 2020, EU member states will be required to ensure the implementation of smart metering in order not only to meet the EU's carbon emissions and renewables targets, but also to meet energy efficiency targets. Across Europe, national governments, energy suppliers and consumers will all be expected to participate actively to reverse the over-production and consumption of power and minimize creation of associated pollutants, especially CO_2, to optimize supply and demand.
