Smart meters being installed worldwide are the most visible aspect of the first steps in the development of the smart grid. However, while the advent of smart meters, and other advances in technology, offer significant perceived benefits to both utilities and consumers, realizing that potential has been challenging. Recent consumer backlash in the United States led the state regulatory authorities in California and Texas to request independent evaluations of smart meters and the smart metering systems being deployed by certain utilities in those states.
