摘要

The electric power industry is in a unique position to take advantage of today's large number of smart grid projects around the world that range from pilots to demonstrations to full scale deployments. The investments, diversity and number of smart grid projects are creating an opportunity to coordinate and collaborate on smart grid research to advance the industry using the most effective technologies and applications while teaming from others. A smart grid holds the promise to facilitate processes for significant carbon emission reductions along with more efficiently linking electric supply and demand through the advancement of low cost information and communication technologies. Contributions from a portfolio of integrated smart grid solutions from efficiency to a broad range of distributed energy resources (DER) including renewable generation, demand response, energy storage, and distributed generation are needed to maximize the expected benefits. The widespread, efficient and cost effective deployment of these technologies poses significant challenges beyond the development and enhancement of the technologies themselves including requiring end-to-end system integration in the distribution system as well as overall power system operations.
