The United States has embarked on a major transformation of its electric power industry into an advanced, digital infrastructure with two-way capabilities for communicating information, controlling equipment, and distributing energy. This evolution is increasing the dependence on information technology and telecommunications infrastructures to ensure the reliability and security of the electric grid. As utilities deploy smart grid technologies through ARRA infrastructure and demonstration project grants, the penetration of this new technology will continue to grow.
