Modernization of the aging electric system to create a "smart" electric grid continues to be an important priority for the United States and many countries around the world. The smart grid represents the integration of information technology and digital communications into the power system in order to improve the cost effectiveness of electricity generation and delivery, provide consumers with tools to make informed decisions about energy consumption and control costs, allow much greater use of renewable energy sources, increase reliability, and support a growing fleet of electric vehicles.
