The power and electricity sector worldwide is going through amazing changes and evolutions at the present time with the development of smarter technologies and ways to integrate these technologies into electrical systems. These basics of the electricity systems have, in many ways, remained unchanged since Thomas Edison installed the world's first transmission and distribution system in 1882. Ironically enough, this system was developed merely as a way to sell light bulbs to the American public. However, in order to do so, "Edison and his tireless workers had to design and build the entire system from scratch, from power stations to cheap and reliable wiring, to lamp stands and switches."
