The batch-pull dilemma: a new small-order batch-picking system

There is ever increasing emphasis throughout the supply chain to minimise stock. Less stock reduces capital deployed. However, less stock also means either smaller ranges or less coverage. Reducing the range of items offered may reduce a supplier's business activity if customers have an alternative supplier with a greater number of products. As overall demand for products remains unchanged, the result is an increase in the number of orders being placed and a decrease in the size of each order. This gives rise to a increase in small order activity.
