There has been a substantial take-up of new technologies in logistics execution in recent times. Both logistics service providers and shippers are starting to make better use of some existing technologies and the leaders are driving uptake of newer innovations. The business case There are good business reasons for the uptake of new technologies and innovations. Logistics service providers (LSP) are always looking for ways to reduce the cost of doing business. The costs are largely broken down into three areas: 1. Labour - equipment operators, drivers, warehouse personnel, etc. 2. Operating costs - such as fuel, maintenance, etc. 3. Capital costs - for purchase of replacement or new equipment, real estate and facilities. For shippers, the cost of shipping goods is key. This includes the picking, packing and actual shipping of goods and includes all the above as well as the cost of transport by their LSP.
