Carboniferous glacial erosional and depositional featuresin Argentina

Carboniferous glacial deposits occur in basins scattered along the southern Gondwana margin from southernBolivia to eastern Australia. In this paper we describe a variety of glacigenic erosional and depositional featuresin western Argentina and central Patagonia including striated pavements associated with tillites, channel-fill con-glomerates and linear sand bodies genetically linked to palaeoeskers. We also describe bedrock features previouslyunknown in glacial deposits of this age, including grooved and channeled rock surfaces at different scales thatare thought to represent glacial meltwater-sculpted forms. Collectively, these lines of evidence indicate that thearea of land surface covered with ice during this glacial period was probably as large as it was during the EarlyPermian glacial period.
