Determining factors of modernization of dairy farming in the Brazilian Amazon

ThearticleidentifiesthefactorsofthemodernizationofdairyfarmingintheAmazonandestimatestheindexofmodernizationofdairyfarming(IMDF),establishingahierarchybetweenthemunicipalitiesasregardsthetechnologicalleveloftheactivity.Fifteenvariablesobtainedfromthe2006agriculturalcensusweresubmittedtofactoranalysis.Fivefactorsofmodernizationwereextracted:F1=foodandsanitarymanagement;F2=specializationofcommercialproduction;F3=animalreproductiontechnology;F4=mechanizationofmilking;andF5=ruralcredit.TheIMDFallowedtheframingof393municipalitiesanalyzedintofourtechnologicallevels(high,medium,lowandverylow),only15municipalitieswereidentifiedwithahightechnologicallevel.TheStateofRondôniahasthemostmoderndairyfarmingintheregion#8211;amongthe15municipalitieswithgreaterIMDF,10werelocatedinRondônia.Therankingofthefactorsindicatesthattheadoptionoffoodandsanitarymanagementpracticesishigherthanthatofreproductivetechnologiesandmechanizationofmilking.Theinstrumentsofagriculturalpolicy,andparticularlyruralcredit,shouldfinancetheuseofthesetechnologiesinordertoincreasetheproductivityoftheherdandgenerateahigherqualityproductthatwouldbringbenefitstothewholeproductionchain.
