BOUNDARIES OF KNOWLEDGE--Application of technical-scientific research findings increases the chances of creating value in the steel industry

Production and application of scientific knowledge geared to industry demands have emerged as an increasing trend in Brazil and the world's steel industry. In this respect, both initiatives motivated by immediate shop floor needs and academic research are inducers of processes for improvement of product quality, reduction in costs and environmental impact as well as facilitators for obtaining gains in competitiveness, productivity and energy efficiency. The interface between science and value creation for society was evident both in the papers presented during the technical sessions of ABM's 65lh International Congress and in the technical contributions and conferences of the 18th Congress of IFHTSE (The International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering) and the 1st TMS/ ABM International Materials Congress. The two last events mentioned were held concurrently with the 65th Congress in Rio de Janeiro in July 2010. The 1st Congress was the result of a partnership between TMS and ABM, the two major technical scientific associations in the areas of metallurgy, materials and mining in North and South America. The 18th IFHTSE counted on the active collaboration from IFHTSE so that it could be held in Brazil.
