Jewelers' Werk's displays have one impact at a large craft and design show such as SOFA, where the visitor is surrounded by an ethos of fine craftsmanship. Their effect is very different after one has passed by shops full of mass-produced objects en route to the gallery's home base in a mall in Washington, D.C. In June, the contrast between bland commodities and vital, experimental forms was all the more striking, thanks to an exhibition of jewelry by Dorothea Pruhl and Andrea Wippermann-the influential teacher and her former student-from the School for Art and Design at Halle, Germany. Halle is a creative haven, as the late jeweler Onno Boekhoudt noted, with many "impressively energetic people (...above all women) concerned to preserve intellectual values." Exemplary products of this environment, the work of both Pruhl and Wippermann communicates rigor and experimental panache.
